Non bouncy stable ride. Good comfort. Quality interior parts. Great gas mileage. The Bad: Low horsepower. And that is about all! With rising gas prices and more and more first time buyers coming out of college without jobs, the budget car market is growing rapidly. Chevy is introducing some amazingly nimble products this year and the Aveo is one of them. The exterior of the Aveo is clean, refreshing and simply cool. The car makes you want to take a second glance. We especially liked the rear tail lamps and the very tight fitting of all parts on the exterior. Body panels have a consistent 3 mm gap which is normally associated with much more expensive vehicles. This is due mainly to non-American design. The car was created in Giorgetto Giugiaro's renowned Italdesign studios in Turin, Italy. Wheels are pushed to the max, way out to the edges. The small front end is normal compared to the cute rear end. The small rear third window captures your eyes. On the sides a indentation swoops down like the roofline. A sporty look is achieved by a small rear wing. The tiny wheels actually look cute on a car we like to car 'microcar'. The ride of the Aveo is something to commend Chevrolet on. We wished that other American cars could have a ride this good. There is no body bounce. Body lean is controlled quite well and all the time the Aveo's ride is not stiff. It is a offshore ride and we are glad to see it in a American car. Steering feedback is good as well, the steering is not loose at all. With the small width of the car and its thin and tiny wheels, taking curves fast is not exactly comforting, but can be fun in an almost mini like way. The ride can probably be improved with wider tires but with the small 103 horsepower and 107 lb.-ft. of torque you will probably struggle to feel any high speed power. The engine is zippy however, and getting to highway speeds does not take very long at all. Moving fast does require you to be at around 4000 rpm and the engine is a bit loud at these levels, however not overly so. The five speed manual transmission was easy to use but could have had more solid shift points. The clutch pedal was light but we think as it should be on a car of this size. We do not like overly sprung or heavy clutch pedals anyhow. The shifter on the other hand lacked precise clicks that would indicate to the driver that you were in gear. We did have a overly hard time changing gears in the Aveo than we have had in other cars. We would definitely buy a automatic if we were going to buy this vehicle as it does offer manual shifting modes and can be much easier to drive in daily life. Sound insulation includes outer and inner pads on the dash panel, engine hood insulation, multi-layer floor insulation and double door seals, which are features typically found in luxury vehicles. Two large mufflers help minimize exhaust noise, with a three-liter capacity front muffler for high-frequency noise absorption and a 13-liter rear muffler for low-frequency noise absorption. The interior of the Aveo is surprisingly roomy and comfortable. The basics are all there in our LS model. Power windows and door locks with a lock and unlock button on the key are found in this model. A good stereo with cd player was also unexpected. The stereo has a built in equalizer and it delivered good bass, but we did not like the turn knob for changing stations and the fact that it was placed far away from the driver. Controls on the steering wheel are really essential. We would have liked to see a trip computer so we could easily look at the fuel mileage this little engine was giving. Estimates are 27 mph in city and 36 mph on the highway. One quirk is a power passenger side rearview mirror but not a power drivers side mirror. This is a bit tacky. Seat cushions and back are constructed of high density foam to provide a medium to soft seating area. This made for easy entry and exit as well with nothing sticking into your legs on the side of the seats as you get out. Our model features a cloth covering which did get dirty easily and if you have pets you will have a problem with this covering. We would have liked a Leatherette offering in this model for this reason alone. The seats do also lack a bit of curvature in the bottom and back which would offer more support for sporty driving. Seats are also raised in what is called stadium seating with the front seats higher than normal for a more minivan-like seating position, and rear seats set a bit higher than the front for better view, a great idea. Rear seat legroom is also quite good for a car this size. What the five door lacks is a good amount of trunk room. There is only a small area behind the rear seats and that can fill up quickly. However the seats fold flat and also flip forward giving you 42 cubic feet of cargo area for taller items. Other little things like hooks on the front seat headrests for easily hanging a bag and large storage pockets in the doors as well as a slot in the instrument panel on the drivers side for parking or ez passes is all very thoughtful. Door panels and the dash use a nice mix of materials from nicely textures door plastic to cloth in a rainbow curve and a smooth carbon fiber material. Most plastic is textures to look like wood just as German car makers do in their higher cost vehicles. The instrument cluster's dome covering and the central dash all hint at the circular theme all around the inside of the Aveo and this all reminds us of the inside of a VW Beetle. What is also great is that you cannot find any hint of budget priced parts in the passenger cabin. The only hint of this comes when you open the trunk and look at the trunk floor where there is a very thin piece of covering. The Aveo is also a surprisingly safe vehicle. It scores five stars in goverment crash tests! Optional is a four sensor ABS system from Delphi. We think that this should have been standard on all models in todays day and age. Each door features a steel intrusion beam to protect against side impact collisions into the low doors. Dual frontal air bags, belt pretensioners and height adjustable shoulder belt anchors are standard. Overall the Aveo is a great machine, the ride is amazing for a car of this size and from these shores. The power is avaialble quite quickly and the interior is very nicely done considering its price. In fact with todays incentives you can probably get this car for around $7000 which is amazing. Why buy a used car when you can have a new one of this good quality? Chevy is doing a great job and we welcome more cars like this from GM. Non bouncy stable ride. Good comfort. Quality interior parts. Great gas mileage. The Bad: Low horsepower. And that is about all! With rising gas prices and more and more first time buyers coming out of college without jobs, the budget car market is growing rapidly. Chevy is introducing some amazingly nimble products this year and the Aveo is one of them. The exterior of the Aveo is clean, refreshing and simply cool. The car makes you want to take a second glance. We especially liked the rear tail lamps and the very tight fitting of all parts on the exterior. Body panels have a consistent 3 mm gap which is normally associated with much more expensive vehicles. This is due mainly to non-American design. The car was created in Giorgetto Giugiaro's renowned Italdesign studios in Turin, Italy. Wheels are pushed to the max, way out to the edges. The small front end is normal compared to the cute rear end. The small rear third window captures your eyes. On the sides a indentation swoops down like the roofline. A sporty look is achieved by a small rear wing. The tiny wheels actually look cute on a car we like to car 'microcar'. The ride of the Aveo is something to commend Chevrolet on. We wished that other American cars could have a ride this good. There is no body bounce. Body lean is controlled quite well and all the time the Aveo's ride is not stiff. It is a offshore ride and we are glad to see it in a American car. Steering feedback is good as well, the steering is not loose at all. With the small width of the car and its thin and tiny wheels, taking curves fast is not exactly comforting, but can be fun in an almost mini like way. The ride can probably be improved with wider tires but with the small 103 horsepower and 107 lb.-ft. of torque you will probably struggle to feel any high speed power. The engine is zippy however, and getting to highway speeds does not take very long at all. Moving fast does require you to be at around 4000 rpm and the engine is a bit loud at these levels, however not overly so. The five speed manual transmission was easy to use but could have had more solid shift points. The clutch pedal was light but we think as it should be on a car of this size. We do not like overly sprung or heavy clutch pedals anyhow. The shifter on the other hand lacked precise clicks that would indicate to the driver that you were in gear. We did have a overly hard time changing gears in the Aveo than we have had in other cars. We would definitely buy a automatic if we were going to buy this vehicle as it does offer manual shifting modes and can be much easier to drive in daily life. Sound insulation includes outer and inner pads on the dash panel, engine hood insulation, multi-layer floor insulation and double door seals, which are features typically found in luxury vehicles. Two large mufflers help minimize exhaust noise, with a three-liter capacity front muffler for high-frequency noise absorption and a 13-liter rear muffler for low-frequency noise absorption. The interior of the Aveo is surprisingly roomy and comfortable. The basics are all there in our LS model. Power windows and door locks with a lock and unlock button on the key are found in this model. A good stereo with cd player was also unexpected. The stereo has a built in equalizer and it delivered good bass, but we did not like the turn knob for changing stations and the fact that it was placed far away from the driver. Controls on the steering wheel are really essential. We would have liked to see a trip computer so we could easily look at the fuel mileage this little engine was giving. Estimates are 27 mph in city and 36 mph on the highway. One quirk is a power passenger side rearview mirror but not a power drivers side mirror. This is a bit tacky. Seat cushions and back are constructed of high density foam to provide a medium to soft seating area. This made for easy entry and exit as well with nothing sticking into your legs on the side of the seats as you get out. Our model features a cloth covering which did get dirty easily and if you have pets you will have a problem with this covering. We would have liked a Leatherette offering in this model for this reason alone. The seats do also lack a bit of curvature in the bottom and back which would offer more support for sporty driving. Seats are also raised in what is called stadium seating with the front seats higher than normal for a more minivan-like seating position, and rear seats set a bit higher than the front for better view, a great idea. Rear seat legroom is also quite good for a car this size. What the five door lacks is a good amount of trunk room. There is only a small area behind the rear seats and that can fill up quickly. However the seats fold flat and also flip forward giving you 42 cubic feet of cargo area for taller items. Other little things like hooks on the front seat headrests for easily hanging a bag and large storage pockets in the doors as well as a slot in the instrument panel on the drivers side for parking or ez passes is all very thoughtful. Door panels and the dash use a nice mix of materials from nicely textures door plastic to cloth in a rainbow curve and a smooth carbon fiber material. Most plastic is textures to look like wood just as German car makers do in their higher cost vehicles. The instrument cluster's dome covering and the central dash all hint at the circular theme all around the inside of the Aveo and this all reminds us of the inside of a VW Beetle. What is also great is that you cannot find any hint of budget priced parts in the passenger cabin. The only hint of this comes when you open the trunk and look at the trunk floor where there is a very thin piece of covering. The Aveo is also a surprisingly safe vehicle. It scores five stars in goverment crash tests! Optional is a four sensor ABS system from Delphi. We think that this should have been standard on all models in todays day and age. Each door features a steel intrusion beam to protect against side impact collisions into the low doors. Dual frontal air bags, belt pretensioners and height adjustable shoulder belt anchors are standard. Overall the Aveo is a great machine, the ride is amazing for a car of this size and from these shores. The power is avaialble quite quickly and the interior is very nicely done considering its price. In fact with todays incentives you can probably get this car for around $7000 which is amazing. Why buy a used car when you can have a new one of this good quality? Chevy is doing a great job and we welcome more cars like this from GM.
